Pandemic Ready: The Basics for Getting Prepared
Pandemic Ready-the Half-day Course
This half-day introductory course is for general audiences, businesses, community response teams, informal community groups, individuals--anyone wishing to learn the basics of preparing for an influenza pandemic, and how this preparation differs from preparing for a natural disaster.
Why do we need to plan for a pandemic if we already have an emergency plan? There are differences we need to be aware of. For example, most emergency plans advise us to prepare for sheltering in place for 3–4 days. If there were to be an influenza pandemic, we would need to shelter in place for up to 10 days. That means that we must plan for continuity of operations—in the workplace, schools, the hospitality and transportation industries, grocery and retail—and continuity of lifestyle for ourselves and our loved ones. When the local public health officer dismisses all students from schools, it has an impact the entire community.
Pandemic Ready is about the basics. The primary training vehicle is a professional PowerPoint presentation containing more than 50 illustrative slides focusing on the latest facts from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other authoritative sources. There is a procedure for active discussion, and pre/post tests.
