Standards and Assessment in School Health Education

This updated binder contains all five of the Professional Development Modules developed by the Health Education Assessment Project (HEAP), with handouts and training activities. The modules will help you explore standards-based health education, assessment, and scoring learn how to teach the skills addressed in the NHES learn how to develop performance tasks. A convenient CD-ROM includes PowerPoint presentations with Notes Pages, reproducible graphics, trainer's handouts, and more.

The objectives of five modules are to:

• provide an introduction to standards-based health education and assessment
• explore how assessment is the key to continuous improvement in instruction
• examine how assessment helps focus teaching strategies
• explore the purpose of student grades
• describe new ways for educators to think about and provide feedback to students
• help classroom educators gain a clear understanding of—and practice in applying—the criteria for the skills addressed in the National Health Education Standards
• provide the basic information needed to create performance tasks and score the tasks using the HEAP rubrics

The PDM Modules binder also provides tips for delivering effective presentation, training activities to reinforce key concepts, accompanying handouts, and CDs. The CDs in each binder contain the professional development modules in PowerPoint format. PowerPoint format allows the information to be tailored to various audiences' needs. The text in the Notes pages explains the information provided in each slide and is offered as a suggested script. However, trainers are encouraged to tailor the script to their audience’s needs.
